In today’s world of technology, spirituality blends traditional beliefs with digital tools, helping explore spiritual growth and community service in new ways. It is important to explore the intersection of spirituality and technology in order to step away from the chaos of social media, and online streaming. As a growing teen, I am amazed by the novel opportunities that technology provides, allowing means of connecting with myself.
Seva, the spiritual practice of selfless service, is straightforward yet transformative. It plays a significant role in making life wholesome as it arises a sense of joy in giving and gifting. This can be in any form, from spending time to serve the needy, or working remotely to benefit others.
Previously, spiritual practices like seva required one to be physically present at an ashram. I have made long trips to remote areas in rural India to bring happiness to village children. While such activities represent the core of seva, my busy life in Dubai prevents such trips from being taken frequently. In my personal experience, technology has allowed me to access spiritual teachings and practices from anywhere. Today, I contribute to the community from my home, using online applications like Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects to edit spiritual message videos that spread across the globe. My experience in video editing as a form of seva provides self-satisfaction, knowing that my skills benefit thousands of seekers in multiple continents.
Millions of followers are now able to access spiritual teachings through smartphones and the Internet via social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. The increasing availability of online platforms is facilitating rapidly increasing access to satsangs (spiritual discourses). This, in turn, is leading to more people being able to practice spirituality from their homes.
Websites are also a means for recreating spiritual sanctuaries across the globe. They provide an array of online resources that aid seekers. For example, SRMD’s online magazines provide self-experiments to try out at home. Similar weekly or monthly subscriptions give seekers discourses, mindful yoga guides, or seva opportunities that can be accessed at the click of a button.
Another rising market is wearable technology, which has expanded rapidly within the high-tech market. Wearables are more commonly employed to maintain calmness and mental well-being in the world where everything is continuously changing. Mindfulness is preserved with a variety of wearable features: smartwatches like the Apple Watch feature regular reminders to breathe, enhancing one’s spiritual growth. Unique breathing exercises and relaxation techniques can be accessed via wearable devices and their downloadable applications.
The software can track and enhance spiritual activities, working to improve users’ way of life. The integration of technology has resulted in the use of AI to personalise seekers’ spiritual experiences: they can access the most effective guided meditation sessions, or preferred mindfulness experiences. All of this enhances spiritual practices with the help of user data analysis; as technology allows devices to monitor heart rate, breathing patterns, and other physiological signals to offer immediate feedback on stress levels.
Spiritual technology is a treasure with immense potential to enrich the practices of many. However, it is important to find an optimal balance between digital tools and traditional tools. This would preserve authenticity and foster a personal connection with one’s mind. I have found that this can be achieved by combining the use of online platforms and wearables with physical activities to create a holistic spiritual routine. Technology encompasses many aspects of my routine: watching live satsangs streams on YouTube, practicing seva by video editing on my computer, and listening to prayers on my smartphone. This is enhanced with in-person practices: visiting the mandir on weekends, playing bhakti on the piano, meeting with friends to distribute old books and toys. It is vital to mindfully use technology to enhance your spiritual journey.
The advancement of modern technology and the Internet has provided platforms galore to foster spiritual growth. Seekers can connect with the community through seva and simultaneously make personal growth through sadhana with a more flexible routine. Access to online resources has skyrocketed globally, demonstrating the importance of adapting to technology to take spirituality forward into the modern era.
